The Longest Night Run is a community vigil where we come together to remember those lost and to honor those struggling through difficult seasons in life.

Wednesday, December 21st is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, with 16 hours of darkness. In southern Manitoba that means 16 hours of darkness, from sunset to sunrise on the 22nd. On this night we will run through the darkness together, rather than sitting through it alone. Though we experience darkness, on this night, we come together to remember we are a light for each other.

This event began as a symbolic gesture to support a friend in the midst of a battle with cancer. Now in its fifth year we will continue to run or walk to support those who are experiencing a difficult season, with proceeds supporting those affected by the war in Ukraine – both local refugees and humanitarian efforts abroad.

You can choose to walk or run, alone or with friends or family – for 30 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours, or the whole night.

We will face the darkness, together.

Any changes in the event for 2022?

Where is this taking place?

Run package pickup and snacks will be available all night at The Public in Steinbach. We have optional routes starting from The Public you can cover.

I’m not in Steinbach, can I still participate?

Yes! Virtual participation is welcome. We’ll mail your package, just select the “mail” option when registering.

I don’t run, can I still participate?

Yes! Feel free to run, walk, ski, or tricycle. There is no minimum distance you need to cover.

When do I sign up for a time slot?

This is a relay, but first we need a relay team. When you register, you’ll be part of the team! A couple weeks before the event we’ll give the opportunity to commit to one (or more!) time slots. Together we’ll run through the night!

Do I have to run or walk for my whole hour-long slot?

Don’t worry if your run is not precisely 60 minutes. The goal of the relay is symbolic solidarity.

Is this a fundraiser?

In 2022, we will be partnering with the Steinbach Area Ukrainian Settlement Task Force to support local refugees, as well as humanitarian efforts. Click to learn more about how these funds will be used.
